Abstract:
The present article is devoted to an analysis of the influence of the Risorgimento era on Feodor Tyutchev’s philosophical and literary views. The author analyses Tyutchev’s poetry and journalism to reveal his attitude to the religious, political, and cultural aspects of the Italian unification, focusing in particular on the poet’s criticism of Western Catholicism. This, in turn, reflects his reflections on the role of religion in European public life in the 19th century. The article explores Tyutchev’s eschatological pessimism, his perception of the Risorgimento as part of a global crisis, and the destruction of traditional foundations and spiritual equilibrium. The article draws parallels between Tyutchev’s poetic works, such as “Encyclica” and “Two Unities,” and his journalistic pieces, including “The Roman Question” and “The Papacy and Revolution,” to facilitate a more profound comprehension of his worldview.
